Sein Lyan Tun (Myanmar)

Sein is an emerging filmmaker from Myanmar. Since “Un-Silent Potato” (2016) gained him recognition in Myanmar and throughout Southeast Asia, he has created numerous works, mostly focusing on youth and women with a concern for human rights.

Yuu Shiratsuki (Chukyo TV Broadcasting Co., Ltd.)

Born in Osaka. Yuu joined Chukyo Television in 2015. After working on variety shows and news programs, Yuu joined the sports department two years ago. She draws on her experience as a former student athlete – swimmer, volleyball and handball player - to cover the local professional baseball team, the Chunichi Dragons, and other athletes. DocCross Asia will be her first experience with documentary production.

"Tsushima Cricket Club"：Project Outline

For a group of foreigners living in a small town in Japan, the local cricket club isn’t just a place where they can play their favorite sport. Instead, it’s a source of mutual support and the center of a strong, multinational community.

Tsushima City in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture is home to a rather unusual cricket club. Its members come from many countries, including Pakistan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar. But it’s more than just a place where they can play their favorite sport. Here, they can lighten the burden of things they keep hidden in their heart: worries about their kids, the hardships of life in Japan, and general concerns about daily existence. The film looks at how this humble cricket club helps its multinational members gain the courage they need to make their way in Japan.

Nguyen Nhat Duy and Phan Ý Linh (Vietnam)

Duy is a graduate of the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema, and a writer and director of feature films, TV series and documentaries. Linh is a writer and producer for Vietnam Television’s VTV7. Together, they’ve created works about education and children in Vietnam that have won several international awards.

"Night School Promises a Better Life": Project Outline

We follow the journey of a young Vietnamese man who’s attending classes at night and uncover his joys and struggles within the Japanese educational system.

He is 18 and was born in Vietnam. He moved to Japan a few years ago to find work. He soon realized that, to get a decent job, he needed a high school diploma. But first, he had to complete junior high and the only option for a student of his age was a school offering classes at night. Students of all ages and backgrounds attend for two hours in the evening, three days a week. Follow him on his journey through the Japanese educational system to a better life in his new home.

Atsuko Church (Goolight Co., Ltd.)

Born in Nagano Prefecture. After working several years for a production company in Tokyo, Atsuko joined cable TV station Goolight in 2017. She is currently in charge of daily news programs and documentaries, and overseas sales of media content. Through her work in local television, she’s committed to maintaining close ties with local people. Her 2019 work, “A Passionate Life,” tells the story of the first Japanese female photojournalist, 104 years old at the time.

"Caring for Caregivers": Project Outline

A young Filipino nurse embarks on a new career as caregiver in Japan. She tries to succeed with the support of her colleagues and community, despite the overwhelming odds.

Stella once worked as a hospital nurse in the Philippines. But four years ago, she moved to Japan in search of a better life. Filipino nurses are often hired as caregivers in Japan. So after 4 years of studying Japanese and working as a trainee, she passed the national exam and started working at a nursing home. But not all young nurses from the Philippines are as fortunate as Stella. Many abandon their plans because of the language barrier, while others choose to return home and continue their nursing careers.
