Noto in Ishikawa Prefecture is blessed with rich nature and a unique history and culture. However, with 40% of the population over 65, the region’s economic wellbeing is in danger. The people who now support local livelihoods are technical intern trainees from overseas. They play a big role in sustaining businesses, and some residents say that, without them, the town itself will eventually die.
Noto is an example of what Japan might look like in 20 years, suffering from aging and depopulation. Japan has the highest aging rate in the world, and it will rise even higher by 2040. But aging populations are an international issue. As many countries face labor shortages, more and more of them are looking to close the gap by recruiting young people from Asia.
In 2020 a new crisis hit Noto: COVID-19. Activities in Japan came to a halt, as did the acceptance of trainees from abroad. Some trainees started thinking about leaving Japan for the sake of their families.
Despite the tough situation, the locals and remaining trainees continue to work together to move forward. This program offers a glimpse of what life was like there in 2020.
