Lasem, in Central Java, is one of the first towns where the Chinese settled in Indonesia in the 13th century. Today, their descendants, the Chinese-Indonesian and the Javanese live together in harmony, respecting each other's culture, and the town still preserves many buildings with a fusion of architectural styles from both regions. Not only ethnic groups, but also various religions live together, such as Islam, Christianity, and Confucianism, making Lasem a unique multicultural community. But how has the cultural tolerance of its residents been nurtured and passed down from generation to generation? One reason is a local Islamic boarding school -Pesantren-, a special school in Indonesia where students live on the same site with their teachers and are given a holistic education to master Islamic teachings. The film introduces the multicultural town of Lasem through an interview with the local Pesantren leader and explores clues to how different races and religions can live together in peace.
