Action figures give shape to characters from anime and video games, and they've gained passionate fans all over the world. Kurayoshi city in Tottori Prefecture is home to the only factory in Japan that mass-produces them. The figure factory has made the city a thriving center of pop culture, complete with a new action figure museum, and has attracted workers from elsewhere in Japan and many other countries.
Fan devotion to these action figures runs deep, and although they are made in factories, they must have artistic value. Through the work of a technician from Taiwan, the program shows the care with which these highly collectible action figures are produced, involving delicate manual work and craftmanship. And it takes you through the streets of Kurayoshi, where traditional buildings still dot the lovely cityscape.
アニメや漫画、ゲームなどのキャラクターをかたどった観賞用の人形、フィギュア。鳥取県倉吉市には、国内唯一のフィギュアの量産工場がある。倉吉には、この工場ができた数年後にはさらにフィギュアの博物館もオープン、街はポップカルチャーで盛り上がり、最近では国内だけでなく海外からも仕事を求めて移り住む人が増えている。こだわりの強いファンが多く、工場量産品でありながら美術的価値が求められるフィギュアの世界。製造工程は手作業が多く、高度な職人技が求められる。作品では、台湾出身の技術者の姿を通して、人の感性が問われるフィギュアならではのものづくりの様子を、伝統的な建物が残る美しい倉吉の街並みと共に伝える。
Kurayoshi is a small provincial city with a population of about 50,000. It’s far from urban centers and distribution networks. I heard that an official in charge of attracting industry recruited the Good Smile company because of his own love for action figures. As part of the city’s revitalization efforts since the launch of the figure factory in 2014, Kurayoshi has also become a destination for fans of the popular characters HinaBitter. At first, locals were a bit skeptical, but they’ve gradually started to join in. Now some of them are big HinaBitter fans as well.
Luo, whose love for Japanese anime lured him from Taiwan to work in the factory, has this to say: “Kurayoshi is like heaven. I want to make action figures that have soul." His passion never wanes even when he faces the difficulties of making figures, which require extreme sensitivity. Luo is one of the miracles that the new pop culture winds have brought to Kurayoshi.
The theme of this program is manufacturing and regional development in Japan, but it is also a story of the connections people can make when driven by passion.
鳥取県倉吉市は、人口およそ5万人の小さな地方都市。決して交通の便が良いとは言えないこの地に、東京に本社を持つ企業が国内唯一であるフィギュア量産工場の操業を開始したのは2014年のこと。県の企業誘致担当職員のフィギュア好きがきっかけだったそうです。
その後、倉吉市は、ポップカルチャーによる町おこしで、人気コンテンツ「ひなビタ♪」の聖地となりました。最初は、「フィギュア？ポップカルチャー？」と首を傾げていた市民も、徐々に町おこしに参加。今では、「ひなビタ♪」の大ファンという方も。
日本のアニメが好きで、来日した台湾出身のロゥさんは、感性を重視するフィギュア業界ならではのモノ作りの難しさに向き合いながら、「倉吉は、天国みたい。魂の入ったフィギュアが作りたい！」と人生を謳歌しています。好きという気持ちに突き動かされ、ここに至るロゥさんの今は、倉吉で吹いた新しい風が運んだ素敵な奇跡と言えるかもしれません。番組の主題は、日本のモノづくりや地方創生ですが、「好き」というシンプルでとても前向きな思いが繋いだ不思議な縁の物語でもあります。
